Rare 2 euro coins: which ones are really worth money

Every few weeks another “valuable 2 euro coin” makes the news. Most coins in your change are still worth exactly €2. Here is what the official mintages actually show.

The short answer

Big countries strike their 2 euro commemoratives in the millions. Germany typically issues 30 million of each. The rare ones are mostly commemoratives from small issuers such as Monaco, the Vatican, San Marino and Andorra, plus single issues like Cyprus 2024 with 7,000 coins. The best known rarity is Monaco 2007 “Grace Kelly” with 20,000 coins.

What the rarities cost

These are retail and guide prices. If you sell, a dealer pays less, and scratches or a missing original case cut the price a lot.

Why you will hardly find them in your change

Small states sold most of their commemoratives straight to collectors. According to muenzen.eu the Grace Kelly coin came in a case, about 4,000 were sold to visitors of an exhibition in Monaco for €110 each and the rest went to the coin trade. Finding one in your change is possible, but very unlikely. They are still legal tender: every 2 euro commemorative is valid across the whole euro area.

Three common myths

“The stick figure coin is rare”

The coin with a figure that merges into the euro sign is the 2009 common issue for ten years of Economic and Monetary Union. According to the ECB every euro country of the time issued it with its own name. Online offers of thousands of euros, such as €8,500, are asking prices.

“An old map of Europe means an error”

Since 1 January 2007 the common side shows all of Europe, before that only the EU of the time. Italy, Austria and Portugal switched with their 2008 coins. An old map on a coin dated 2002 to 2006 is normal. A real exception is the German 2008 Hamburg coin from the Stuttgart mint (F), which exists as a mule with the old map according to zwei-euro.com.

“Coins dated 2002 are valuable”

2002 was the year euro cash was introduced, and every country struck its circulation coins in huge numbers. The date alone says nothing about rarity.

How to check your 2 euro coins

  1. Find the country on the national side, often with an abbreviation such as “MC” for Monaco or “RSM” for San Marino.
  2. Match it with the list: country, year and design must all fit.
  3. Weigh it: a genuine 2 euro coin weighs 8.50 g and measures 25.75 mm. A scale with 0.01 g steps catches crude fakes and tampered coins.
  4. Look at the condition: scratches, discoloration and a missing case lower the price.
  5. Get a second opinion from a dealer or auction house if you think you have a real one.
